Brink’s Canada Is Partnering with World Vision in Project Katwe, Uganda

Mississauga, ON, August 2008

“We are never too poor to give or too rich to receive”*

(“The Power of Generosity" by Dave Toycen, President & CEO, World Vision Canada)

The sole belief that we can make this world a better place to live is a strong motivator for our continuous involvement in charitable initiatives aimed at improving health care, fighting poverty and assisting less fortunate communities to self-sustain.

For over two years, Brink’s worldwide has been involved in the Global Business Coalition (GBC) on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria . The mandate of GBC is to harness the individual and collective power of the world’s top corporations to fight AIDS at the local, national, and international levels. The infrastructure and competencies of global corporations in the fight against life-threatening diseases are strong assets.

In Canada, Brink’s has a long-standing relationship with World Vision through a partnership on programs and initiatives directed to regions and countries that have been most affected by HIV/AIDS. A quick look at available statistics [1] shows that in 2007 there were 33.2 million people living with HIV out of which 2.5 million were children under 15 years. Every day, over 6800 persons become infected with HIV and over 5700 persons die from AIDS, mostly because of inadequate access to HIV prevention and treatment services. The HIV pandemic remains the most serious of infectious disease challenges to public health. These statistics alone are shocking enough to justify global coalitions, corporate involvement and individual commitment around the world to find a solution. Because no child should be deprived of the right to health care and education. How else can we invest in the future if these two prerequisites to human development are missing?

Brink’s Canada has partnered with World Vision to raise funds for orphaned and vulnerable children in Katwe, Uganda. With over 80% living on less than $1 a day and an AIDS prevalence rate of 6.7%, the life expectancy of Ugandans is only 49 years.

A recent survey in Uganda found that a majority of school aged children drop out of school to care for ill family members living with HIV and AIDS. Eventually many of these children are orphaned and they lack the ability to provide for their remaining family and seldom have the resources to return to school. The goal of project Katwe is to improve the quality of life for these children. The project will appoint communities most at risk and provide children with income generating skills, send them to secondary school and improve access to health care within their community. The Katwe Area Development Program goal is to contribute to improving the quality of life for over 46,460 people through agriculture, education, healthcare, leadership, HIV and AIDS prevention, care and advocacy and water development interventions.

The national fundraising program has been launched in all Brink’s Canada branches with extraordinary feedback and commitment from all the employees.

Tickets are available at each branch. In exchange for a $2 donation, Brink’s employees will receive tickets to be entered into the draw for the four Grand Prizes**

  • One (1) Weber Spirit Propane Grill
  • One (1) 37” Sharp Aquos LCD TV
  • One (1) 46” Panasonic HD Plasma TV
  • One (1) Airfare Prize anywhere in Canada

Raffle will be drawn on September 26th, 2008.
