Inquiry about submitted applications
Q: I recently applied, what is the status of my application?
A: Thank you for your application. If you do not receive a call from us within one week, please contact the Brink’s Canada branch closest to your residence. For a complete list of our locations, please see the section “Contact Us”.
Q: Where your application states “do you have a permit to carry a weapon” do I check “yes”?
A: An “Authorization to Carry” or “ATC” is provided upon completion of the in-house Brink’s Firearms Training. It is different than your PAL or FAC.
Licenses and permits
Q: What is a “PAL” and how do I obtain one?
A: The acronym P.A.L. stands for Possession and Acquisition License. This term is used in place of Firearms Acquisition Certificates or F.A.C.
Firearms Acquisition Certificates (FAC) issued under the former law are considered to be licenses. They need to be replaced with a PAL before they expire. The Possession and Acquisition License (PAL) is the only license currently available to new applicants. It is renewable every five years. The fee to renew a license is waived until May 17, 2008. As a general rule, applicants must have passed the Canadian Firearms Safety Course in order to obtain one. Both the restricted and non-restricted courses and license must be obtained in order to be employed for most jobs. (For more information, please visit : http://www.cfc-cafc.gc.ca/info_for-renseignement/Licensing/default_e.asp)
Q: What is the “Canadian Firearms Safety Course”?
A: The Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CFSC) was developed in partnership with the provinces and territories, national organizations with an ongoing interest in firearms safety, and many firearms and hunter education course instructors from across Canada. This course was developed to meet the mandatory requirements set out in subparagraph 106(2)(c)(i) of the Criminal Code of Canada and came into effect January 1, 1994. (For more information, please visit : http://www.cfc-cafc.gc.ca/safety-surete/safety_course_e.asp)
Q: What is the “Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course”?
A: In accordance with the Firearms Act, a new firearms safety course focusing on restricted firearms (primarily handguns) was developed and implemented on February 1, 1999. The legislation stipulates that individuals wishing to acquire restricted and/or prohibited firearms must take the Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CFSC) and the Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course (CRFSC) and pass the tests OR challenge and pass the CFSC and the CRFSC tests without taking either course. (web site: http://www.cfc-cafc.gc.ca/safety-surete/safety_restricted_e.asp)
Q: Where can I take the CFSC or the CRFSC?
A: The responsibility for course delivery rests with each province and territory. To obtain contact information for your province or territory please visit: http://www.cfc-cafc.gc.ca/safety-surete/contacts_e.asp
Q: Can I apply to Brink’s Canada while my PAL is in process?
A: You are able to apply while it is in process. However, those who possess the PAL will be given preference.
Q: What is the cost of my PAL?
A: The cost is approximately $160 for both the non-restricted and restricted safety course, plus $80 for the application fee for your actual license.
Q: Do I need a special License to drive your Vehicles? What if I do not want to be a Driver?
A: You require a regular “G” license in Ontario, a “Class 3” for Quebec and a “Class 5” for all other Provinces. Employees will be trained in many job functions including Guard, Driver, Messenger and ATM Technicians.
Q: How do I get my Driver’s Abstract?
A: You can go to the nearest Driver’s Licensing Office or Kiosk to obtain one. It must not be older than three months when hired.
Q: What does a “Clean Driver’s Abstract” mean?
A: No convictions of serious traffic violations. Applications will be reviewed on an individual basis. You may be required to provide proof or clarity.
Q: What are the requirements to work for Brink’s Canada on the road?
A: A clean driver’s abstract, a clean background check, the willingness to wear a uniform and your credit history must be in good standing.
Q: What is the difference between FAC and PAL?
A: PAL has replaced the terminology of FAC.
Q: I have my non-restricted PAL but I cannot afford to take the restricted test at this point in time. Would that disqualify me for employment?
A: Not all of our jobs require a Possession and Acquisition License. You can still apply, indicating this and we will try to accommodate you. You may be eligible for the PAL Reimbursement Program.
Q: What is the difference between “restricted” & “non-restricted PAL”?
A: In accordance with the Firearms Act, a new firearms safety course focusing on restricted firearms (primarily handguns) was developed and implemented on February 1, 1999. The legislation stipulates that individuals wishing to acquire restricted and/or prohibited firearms must take the Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CFSC) and the Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course (CRFSC) and pass the tests.
Q: My credit is not so good, will this disqualify me?
A: Each application is reviewed on an individual basis.

A: You can still apply. However, as a general rule, you will be required to provide proof of the details and status of your credit standing at the present time.
Q: Do I need my High School Diploma to be hired by Brink’s Canada?
A: High School graduation is not mandatory, but it is recommended to have it or obtain your High School Equivalency.
Q: I have an Army background; will this give me a better chance for employment?
A: Having this background can assist you in your role. However, Brink’s Canada has specific internal training.
Q: Do I need to pass a medical exam before I get hired?
A: Yes. We have a pre-medical exam for all of our staff, following a conditional offer of employment. This will need to be completed prior to an official offer of employment.
